Implementing Goodsync Server on Synology NAS for Efficient Data Management and Backup

As a self-employed individual with multiple devices, machines, and systems, managing and backing up data can be a daunting task. I've chosen to build my data management and backup scheme around a Synology NAS, specifically the DS1019+. With various devices generating different types of data, implementing a robust backup strategy is crucial to ensure data safety.

In my case, data resides on multiple machines, including laptops, removable drives, and virtual machines. This complexity requires a tailored approach to achieve near-perfect data threat coverage. The 3-2-1 backup strategy provides an excellent foundation for this endeavor, as it ensures three copies of the data, two different physical media, and at least one off-site copy.

To achieve this, I've implemented Goodsync Server on my Synology NAS. This allows me to synchronize data across all devices, ensuring that changes are reflected in real-time. The Goodsync Server also enables me to set up automated backups to external hard drives or cloud storage services like IDrive, which offers client-side encryption for added security.

To illustrate the 3-2-1 strategy in action, let's consider a scenario where I accidentally delete a file while on vacation. With my setup, I can retrieve the deleted file from the cloud backup, ensuring that data loss is minimized. Similarly, if my house were to be robbed or burned down, my off-site backup would remain safe, providing peace of mind.

In addition to Goodsync Server, I've also set up regular backups using Time Machine (Mac) or File History (Windows), which takes care of backing up my devices in a hands-off and automatic manner. This approach ensures that data is backed up consistently, without the need for manual intervention.
